How to get more work as a builder
Updated 1 October 2026 · 5 minute read
Building work is won on trust. The customer is handing over their house and a lot of money for months. These are the things that make them trust you before you've met.
1. Photograph everything
Take photos at the start, during and at the end of every job. They're your portfolio, your Google profile content and your proof. A customer comparing three builders will often pick the one whose finished work looks most like what they want.
2. Turn your best jobs into project pages
Put a page on your website for each standout project: the type of build, the town, what the customer wanted, how long it took, and photos. With the customer's permission and never their address. These pages win trust and show up when people search for that kind of project locally.
3. Architects, technicians and designers
People who draw up plans are asked "do you know a good builder?" all the time. Get to know local architects, architectural technicians and kitchen designers, do a good job on the projects they send you, and they'll keep sending them.
4. Be clear about planning and building control
Customers worry about the paperwork. GOV.UK points out that building regulations approval is different from planning permission, and that you might need both. Explaining how you handle it, in plain English, is a reason to choose you.
5. Your Google profile and reviews
"Builders near me" gets about 18,100 searches a month in the UK (Local Ladder's tracker, September 2026). Keep your Google Business Profile complete, post project photos, and ask for a review at every handover. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking. Our SEO for builders guide and reviews guide cover the detail.
6. Memberships that customers recognise
If you're a member of a scheme or trade body such as TrustMark or the Federation of Master Builders, show it on your website, profile and quotes. For a big project, it's reassurance customers look for.
7. Paid leads, measured
Local Ladder's UK Trade Lead Cost Tracker (verified 30 September 2026) puts a top-of-page Google Ads click on "builders near me" at £1.54 to £6.18, MyBuilder shortlists at typically £5 to £35 each, and Checkatrade at £30 a month (Approved) or from £59 a month (Growth), plus VAT. Leads for big jobs are often shared with other builders, so the trust you've built with photos and reviews is what wins them.
