How much does a website cost for a builder in the UK?
Updated 1 October 2026 · 4 minute read
For a builder, one extension can be worth more than everything a website will ever cost. So the real question isn't the price, it's whether the site actually helps you win those jobs.
The price, briefly
You can build your own site on Wix from about £108 a year, or pay a designer £1,500 or more. Our website cost guide sets out every option with sources. For a builder, the price matters far less than whether the site wins the big jobs.
The size of the job you're competing for
Checkatrade's 2026 bungalow extension guide puts a single-storey extension at £1,900 to £3,500 per square metre, £2,750 on average. At that average, even a small 15 m² extension is over £40,000. Win one extra project from your website and it has paid for itself many times over.
What a builder's website must show
- Finished projects, with lots of photos. People choosing a builder want to see work like theirs. A project page for each job, with the town and the type of build, does more than any amount of copy.
- A page for each type of build: extensions, lofts, garage conversions, renovations.
- How you work: the stages, how you handle planning and building control, how you keep customers updated.
- Reviews from big jobs, and any memberships such as TrustMark or the Federation of Master Builders.
- An easy way to get in touch, including WhatsApp for sending plans or photos.
Compared with paying for leads
Local Ladder's UK Trade Lead Cost Tracker (verified 30 September 2026) puts a top-of-page Google Ads click on "builders near me" at £1.54 to £6.18, MyBuilder shortlists at typically £5 to £35 each, and Checkatrade at £30 a month (Approved) or from £59 a month (Growth), plus VAT. Leads for big projects often go to several builders at once. A website is where you win the comparison.
