How much does a website cost for a tradesperson?

Quotes for a trade website range from almost nothing to several thousand pounds. Here's what each option really costs in 2026, where the catches are, and what you actually need.

Short answer: Building it yourself costs roughly £108 to £192 a year plus your time. A freelancer or agency usually charges £1,500 or more up front. Pay-monthly schemes typically run £29 to £75 a month, often on a 12-month contract. On top of any of these, a .co.uk domain costs around £8 to £15 a year once any first-year offer ends.

Option 1: build it yourself

Website builders like Wix and Squarespace let you make a site from a template. The cheapest plans that let you use your own web address cost:

The money isn't the real cost. The real cost is your evenings: choosing a template, writing every page, sorting out photos, and working out why it looks wrong on a phone. It suits people who enjoy that sort of thing. With Squarespace, a free domain for the first year only comes with yearly billing.

Option 2: a freelancer or agency

A web designer builds the site for you. For a small brochure site, recent UK guides put the price at:

£1,500 to £3,000 for a five-page site from a freelancer, or £3,000 to £5,000 from an agency (Whito, May 2026).
£1,500 to £3,500 for a basic four-to-six-page brochure site (MoneyMagpie, July 2026).

Whito also found that extras such as hosting, maintenance and copywriting commonly add another 30 to 50%. You'll usually get a site built around your business, but you pay up front, often with a deposit, before you've seen the finished thing.

Option 3: pay monthly

Pay-monthly schemes spread the cost. Some examples from providers' own pricing pages:

Pay monthly can work well, but read the small print. Over three years, £39.99 a month adds up to more than £1,400, and on some plans you never own the site.

The running costs everyone pays

Your domain (yourname.co.uk): 123 Reg says most small businesses pay £8 to £15 a year once the introductory price ends.
Hosting (keeping the site online): basic hosting starts at around £3.99 a month (GoDaddy), and Whito puts typical hosting at £50 to £300 a year.

What a trade website actually needs

You don't need anything clever. The sites that win work for trades usually have:

A page for each job you do, so someone searching for "boiler service" or "fence repair" lands on the right page.
Your phone number and a WhatsApp button that are easy to tap on a phone.
Your Google reviews, and photos of your real work.
Your town and the areas you cover, written in plainly.
Your own web address, not a free subdomain.

Five questions to ask before you pay anyone

Do I own the website, and can I take it with me if I leave?
Whose name is the domain registered in?
Is there a minimum contract, and what does it cost to leave early?
What exactly does the monthly or yearly fee cover?
Can I see the site before I pay for it?
