Turfing & lawns: your questions answered
When is the best time to lay turf?
Spring and autumn are ideal, because the ground is moist and the weather is mild. Turf can be laid in summer too, but it needs plenty of watering. Frozen or waterlogged ground should be avoided.
How soon can I walk on new turf?
Keep off it as much as you can for two to three weeks while the roots establish. A light first cut can usually be done once the grass has grown and the turf doesn't lift when gently tugged.
How often should I water new turf?
Water it daily in dry weather for the first couple of weeks, enough to soak through to the soil underneath. Lift a corner to check. Once it has rooted, water less often but more deeply.
