Fencing & gates: your questions answered
How high can a garden fence be?
Without planning permission, a fence can usually be up to 2 metres high, or 1 metre where it runs next to a road used by vehicles. Listed buildings and conservation areas may have extra rules, so check with your council first.
Should I choose concrete or timber posts?
Concrete posts don't rot and suit standard panels, which slot in between them. Timber posts look more natural and suit close-board and feather-edge fences. Both last well when they're set deep in concrete.
Who is responsible for a boundary fence?
Your property deeds or title plan may show who owns each boundary, sometimes marked with a 'T'. It's worth checking and talking to your neighbour before a shared fence is replaced.
