FAQs
Decking: your questions answered
Composite or timber decking?
Timber looks natural and costs less to start with, but needs regular cleaning and treating. Composite costs more upfront but won't rot, splinter or need staining, and only needs an occasional wash.
Do I need planning permission for decking?
Usually not, as long as the deck is no more than 30cm above the ground and, together with any extensions and outbuildings, covers no more than half the garden. Raised decks, listed buildings and conservation areas are different, so check with your council.
Is decking slippery?
Any deck can get slippery when it's wet and shaded. Grooved boards, good airflow underneath and regular cleaning all help. Many composite boards have a textured, slip-resistant surface.
