Raised beds, walls & sleepers: your questions answered
How long do sleeper raised beds last?
Oak sleepers last for many years. Pressure-treated softwood lasts well too, especially when it's lined with a membrane to keep damp soil off the timber.
Are railway sleepers safe for growing vegetables?
Old reclaimed railway sleepers can contain creosote, which isn't suitable where you're growing food. New oak or softwood sleepers treated with modern preservatives are the safer choice for vegetable beds.
Do retaining walls need special construction?
Yes. A wall holding back soil needs a proper footing and drainage behind it, so water pressure doesn't push it over. Taller retaining walls may need advice from an engineer.
