Artex & textured ceilings: your questions answered
Does Artex contain asbestos?
Textured coatings applied before 2000 may contain asbestos. You can't tell by looking, so a sample should be tested by an accredited lab before any sanding, scraping or drilling. If asbestos is found, it must be handled by a suitably trained or licensed specialist.
Is it better to remove Artex or skim over it?
Skimming over is usually quicker, cleaner and cheaper, because it avoids disturbing the coating. Full removal is rarely needed unless the ceiling itself is failing, and it should only happen after testing.
Can you just paint over Artex?
Yes, if you're happy to keep the texture. It takes more paint than a flat ceiling and needs a thick-pile roller to reach every groove. If you want it smooth, skimming is the answer.
