Wooden flooring: your questions answered
Engineered or solid wood flooring?
Engineered boards have a real timber top layer on a stable core. They cope better with changes in temperature and humidity, and many suit underfloor heating. Solid wood can be sanded more times but moves more.
Does the old floor need to come up?
Not always. Some new floors can go over existing boards or tiles if they are sound and level. Carpet, soft underlay and badly uneven surfaces usually need to come up first.
Why should flooring be left in the room before fitting?
Timber adjusts to the temperature and humidity of a room. Leaving the boards in place for a few days before fitting, as the manufacturer advises, helps reduce gaps and movement later.
