Clues include the direction of the floor joists above, walls that run through the middle of the house and walls with rooms directly above them. A builder or structural engineer can confirm it on site.
Do I need building control to remove a wall?
Yes, if the wall is load-bearing. Building control needs the engineer's calculations and will inspect the beam before it is covered. You receive a completion certificate at the end.
Will removing a wall affect my neighbours?
If the beam bears onto a party wall, you will usually need to serve party wall notices. This is common in terraced and semi-detached houses.
