What is Part P and why does it matter?
Part P is the section of the Building Regulations that covers electrical safety in homes. Notifiable work, such as a new circuit or consumer unit, must be notified to building control, usually through a registered competent person scheme. It protects you and matters when you sell your home.
Will I get a certificate for the work?
You should. New installations and rewires come with an Electrical Installation Certificate, and smaller jobs come with a Minor Works Certificate. Keep them safe, as buyers and insurers may ask for them.
How often should my electrics be checked?
The usual guidance is every 10 years for a home you own and every 5 years for a rented property. It's also worth a check when you move in, or if the property has been empty for a while.
How can I tell if my wiring is unsafe?
Warning signs include burning smells, scorch marks on sockets, buzzing, lights that flicker, breakers that trip often and an old fuse box with fuse wire. If you notice any of these, get an electrician to take a look.
How do I check an electrician is registered?
Search the Electrical Competent Person register online, or the NICEIC or NAPIT websites. It only takes a minute and is worth doing before any notifiable work.
Will my power be off while you work?
